There are several factors that should be considered in the selection of window treatments.

The window functions to allow light in as well as frame a view of the outside.  It also has an impact on the temperature of the room by transmitting heat and cold.  What the room is designed to be used for should also be taken into consideration as well as the desired atmosphere in the room.

Basically there are three types of treatments, each with their own optimum uses.  “Hard” treatments typically consist of shades, blinds and shutters.  They allow for control of the amount of light into a room as well as screening the view to those outside. Among the newer type shades are the “cellulars” that create a pocket of insulating air to reduce heat and cold transfer.

Blinds and shutters have the additional benefit of being adjustable for the amount of light coming in.  Rooms where TV’s and movie screens will be in use, as well as rooms where privacy is a key issue, are good locations for hard window treatments.  Because these treatments are generally based on a horizontal line they tend to be considered more contemporary and casual in style than drapes.

I have coined a term “Medium” window treatments to cover the use of heavy fabric draw drapes.

My logic is that they are designed for the same functions as the hard treatments, yet are not hard in terms of texture and visual impact. Heavy fabric drapes serve an additional function in their ability to absorb sound. Drapes typically are designed to extend near to the floor and therefore present a vertical line impact.  This creates a more formal appearance which can be maximized by the use of a heading such as a cornice (fabric covered wood panel) to further extend the vertical height and add visual impact. Headings of any kind will conceal the hardware mountings of the window treatments and create a more aesthetic look.

The traditional “soft window treatments” was based on texture as fabric in comparison to wood, metals and plastics.  Traditionally drapes are made of heavy fabric and generally full length, whereas curtains are usually light fabrics and come in a variety of lengths and styles. Curtains create a more casual look dependent on the fabric used.  Curtains, swags and valances typically serve a decorative, rather than functional purpose.

It is possible to create a full range of combinations of these window treatments. With careful evaluation of the factors of selection and awareness of the variety of materials available for each treatment, it is possible to incorporate the window area as a vital component in the overall look and feel of the room’s setting.

Most of us are blissfully unaware of the microorganisms that share our living environments.  Fighting off germs that are common to our home environments strengthens our immune systems.  Advance years or conditions of bodily stress can weaken or overwhelm the immune system.  This is why it is crucial for medical care and senior living facilities to maintain exceptionally hygienic environments.  In social gatherings each individual faces unfamiliar germs.  Educational and public facilities, as well as public transit systems are also major factors in the spread of disease.

All “germs” are not created equal.  Bacteria, molds and fungi are complete living organisms.  They carry on their life functions within their own cells.  Viruses, on the other hand, are not complete and can only carry on reproduction and metabolism when inside a host organism.  That is why antibiotics are not effective on viruses. This distinction becomes important in regard to the term “antimicrobial”.  Where a manufacturer claims a product to be “antimicrobial” the product may or may not include effectiveness on viruses dependent on its killing mechanism.  When in doubt, check with the manufacturer.

Over the last few decades advances in science technology have made it possible to see matter and life forms down to the level of atoms and molecules.  This led to the discovery and study of virus particles.  It also launched a new research field called nanotechnology. It was discovered that the electrostatic and covalent bonding of some metallic molecules could be harnessed to create superior antimicrobial products.  This gave rise to the manufacture of a myriad of “antimicrobial’ products.

In 2007 announcements of coatings based on titanium oxide appeared.  These coatings work when visible light energizes the titanium oxide particles, posing an oxidizing lethal barrier to microbes.  Original forms required UV light, newer forms are effective with indoor incandescent or fluorescent lighting.  It is available in ready to use spray products for application to many surfaces, turning them into round the clock warriors in the fight against the spread of bacterial and viral diseases.

Silver is a natural element and is non toxic to humans in the applications discussed below.  Most healthcare professionals have heard about Crypton fabrics.  This is one of several applications built on silver ion chemistry.  Others include:

• Silver ion based disinfectants which have been recommended by the U. S Centers for Disease Control for use in the battle to control the spread of H1N1 virus (Swine Flu).
• Transparent interior coatings for use on manufactured products such as painted metal and plastic surfaces.  They provide easy to clean surfaces that resist penetration of water, oils and stains.  Effectiveness is sustained even after repeated washings and is an excellent choice for such things as public transit and healthcare applications,

There was a restaurant (a.k.a. diner) that was a personal favorite of mine.  It had a mix of booths and table and chair seating.  There were glass partitions on the booth seats as well as a few structural partitions at the entry of the table seating area.  The tables and chairs were the traditional, somewhat colonial style, wooden furniture. The entire dining area was carpeted.  It had a nice atmosphere because you could easily carry on a conversation without being mindful of how many other customers were there.

I can only guess that the carpeting was the original incentive for the remodeling.  It had become darkened over time and, if you really looked at it, was a bit of an eyesore.  How the owner came to his decisions on the remodeling I don’t know, but there has been a critical functional deterioration.  The major problem results from replacing all the carpeting with hard tile flooring.  A second factor is that the newer updated booths have no apparent partition panels.  The dining tables and chairs were replaced with more contemporary, less dense materials that do not have the elegance or sound absorption quality of their predecessors.  The entire interior was repainted and this makes the appearance cleaner, crisper and more spacious looking. The dining areas are now essentially one large area with full visibility of sight and sound from the front door all the way to the last seats in the back.

The result of the remodeling has yielded a diner that has a contemporary crisp look with all the dining charm of a major airport or train terminal.  It is no longer possible to have a quiet personal conversation.  It is wearisome to have to repeat everything (including your order) several times to be heard above the collective roar of the entire dining room.

The point of all this is simply that aesthetics should NEVER be given priority over the functional considerations of the facility.
